Studs

Sometimes you read for homework. Sometimes you read because someone recommends something to you. And tTerkelhen sometimes you read for fun. I decided to break up all this fiction around here with an oral history I’d been wanting to read for months now. A friend said that the World War Z novel and then movie was inspired by Studs Terkel’s The Good War, an oral history of World War II.

And while fun maybe isn’t the right word for it, I am enjoying this book a lot. Between the mid-sixties and the early eighties, he interviewed dozens of folks: front-line infantry guys, American wives and girlfriends back home, Japanese folks, Germans, Jews, admirals, pilots, black soldiers, and many others. It’s heartbreaking and tough and wonderful.
