The ol’ ekphrasis

Something of mine up the other day over at The Light Ekphrastic, a cool online journal wherein smart, clever folks trade poetry or paintings or photographs and then respond by writing or painting or shooting what gets inspired. I found it to be an exhilarating exercise. I worked from a poem about Athens, and here’s what came of it.

Ms. Atwood

I don’t remember who turned me on to The Handmaid’s Tale but I’m glad it happened. It’s one of the best novels I’ve ever read and I think about it, as they say, often. She’s wonderful. Unreal only enough to make her story catchy and the stories themselves are deeply grabbing. Grabby, even. She’s great. I’m having a harder time being immediately grabbed by The Blind Assassin, but at page 180, I’m glad I stuck with it. It’s so complex, plot-wise, and each part feeds so expertly into the others. She’s amazing, really. If I could do anything a quarter as good as she does, I’d consider myself skilled.
